LITHIUM BATTERIES IN QLD RENTAL PROPERTIES

Lithium batteries, while commonly used and efficient, do pose serious safety considerations, especially when plugged in and left unattended. In rental properties, it’s important to take precautions to minimize any potential hazards or fire dangersassociated with lithium batteries.

Lithium batteries can be in many appliances such as, but not exclusive to:
  • Mobile Phones, I pads/tablets, drones.
  • Power tools such as drills, blowers, lawn mowers,
  • Hover boards, bikes, scooters and many more.

SOME GENERAL SAFETY PRACTICES INCLUDE:

1. Proper storage: Store lithium batteries in a cool, dry place, preferably in a fireproof container or battery storage bag. Avoid storing them near flammable materials.

2. Avoid damage: Prevent physical damage to the batteries, such as puncturing or crushing, as it can lead to a safety risk. Inspect batteries regularly for any signs of damage or leakage.

3. Charging safety: If charging lithium batteries in a rental property, use appropriate charging equipment designed for the specific battery type and follow manufacturerinstructions. Avoid charging batteries unattended or overnight.

4. Do not leave any appliance with a lithium battery charging in a rental property while unattended.

5. Insurance companies are becoming reluctant to pay claims where it can be proved the damage was caused by a lithium battery being charged with unapproved charging cord or plug or the battery being left on charge while the property is unattended.

Remember, it's essential to stay informed about any updated safety guidelines or regulations provided by local authorities or fire departments to ensure the highest level of safety in
