10 thoughtful guest bedroom styling tips

Guest Bedroom Ideas

Looking after guests really means anticipating their needs. Like any design decision, it's about problem solving – there are both practical and decorative considerations involved.

Our first piece of advice is to spend a night in the guest bedroom. Is the room too cold or unpleasantly bright? Is the old sofa bed comfortable or is it time for a new one? Thrill your guests by incorporating some of the unexpected treats we all love in a good hotel or B&B – let's call them guest room essentials.

Here are some thoughtful styling tips to help you create a guest bedroom comparable to your fave boutique hotel.

1. COMFY BED

The first thing we do when we get to a hotel is dive straight onto the bed – We all love a big fluffy doona, plush pillows and stylish throws. Give your guest the same level of luxury and stack your guest bed with decorative cushions and a lush throw.

2. MAXIMISE THE VERSATILITY

We all have a range of family and friends that could come and stay, so think about bedding options that maximise the versatility of your guest room. A double or queen together with a foldout single bed, disguised as a chair, is a great balance. Use good pillows, too.

3. PROVIDE A BENCH

Hotels do it, and space permitting you should do it too – include an ottoman or bench so your guests can have somewhere flat and off the floor for their suitcase. This makes light work of both packing and unpacking but also allows good access throughout their stay.

4. CODE YOUR TOWELS

We all love a stack of fluffy towels but avoid white unless you have daily access to a serious commercial laundry. Colour-code the towels! This is an easy way for your guests to keep track of their towel and simplifies sorting the family linen from the guest linen. Colourful patterns work well and keep things looking nice.

5. PROVIDE STORAGE AND HANGERS

Make sure there's plenty of space for your guest to hang their clothes. Remove "out-of-season" clothes from the guest wardrobe and provide adequate hangers... hotels rarely do.

6. REMEMBER MIRRORS MATTER

Include a full-length mirror, and possibly a second smaller one, in the guest room. This will take the pressure off the ensuite or family bathroom, and enable more than one person to get ready simultaneously.

7. LIGHT THE NIGHT STAND

Lamps are not created equally! A great guest room bedside lamp should be completely adjustable. Articulated-arm lamps will accommodate a range of needs in terms of height and light direction. Make sure the lamp's control is easy to find and use.

8. INSTALL A TV

Not only will your guests need a little down time but a TV is also an excellent way to entertain the early riser or night owl while keeping them from taking over the entire house.

9. FRESH SCENTS

Beautiful scents can make a room feel fresh and homely from the moment you enter. You could find out what your guests' favourite flowers are and have a bunch in a vase on their arrival. Or, you could use a gorgeous room spray or scented candle instead.

10. TOILETRIES

The two Ts that are a standard part of hotel stays. Make sure your guest has a fresh towel in their room on arrival and some essential toiletries (shampoo, conditioner and soap) in the bathroom. You could even use the mini toiletries you've stocked up on from your own hotel stays (it's ok, we all do it!).
