REALITY BITES with Dave Danes of First National Palm Beach

Kingscliff Triathlon - Multi Fun Weekend (18 March 2018)

I represented our First National triathlon team and had my first Triathlon on Sunday 18th March at Kingscliff. Adam Sandbrook from “Sandbrook Grant lawyers” in Burleigh was our swimmer. I did the 40 km bike ride and Peter Gill from “all signs” in Burleigh did the 10 Km run. Much to our surprise and delight, we got 1st place in the Mens Olympic relay team. You are never too old to compete!

Adam did the swim leg that was 1.35km and he Blitz it. The swim started at the mouth of Cudgen Creek, Peter  and myself were standing halfway down the creek, I said “Pete, that’s Adam out in front” but you couldn't tell because everybody had yellow caps on and the arms were flaying everywhere. But sure enough it was Adam that come out of the water first. It was a 450m run to get to the transition and running is not Adam’s strong points and I left the bike transition in second position. Within 30secs of that  40 kilometre bike ride my heart rate was racing and if anyone tells you that triathlons are fun then they have never done one. I was in a world of hurt and pain. I did the first lap of the course and took a wrong turn so there were a few competitors that went past me. I had to make it up and really flogged myself over the 40 K’s to get ourselves back into a position coming into the transition. Peter was off on his 10km run and he did a good pace in what was trying conditions. The stiff breeze I had in the bike leg dropped out around 9.30am so it was stifling hot for all the runners. To run 10ks so quickly for a 54-year-old guy, Gilly did admirably.

Money raised from the event went to local charities including Cudgen Headland S.L.S.C. ( Swim Safety), Rotary Tweed and The Men Shed Pottsville (Marshalling Volunteers), Murwillumbah Scouts (Water Stations), Kingscliff Tafe (Massage), Tweed Coast Raiders ( Run Coarse).

We will have our next  race on 29 April  in the Moreton Bay Triathlon in Brisbane leading up to the big one, Byron Bay Triathlon on 12 May. Stay tuned!
