STYLING TIPS FOR OUR LITTLE ONES

Creating a stylish, yet practical and safe space at home for little ones can be a challenging task.  Their bedrooms and play areas not only need to be robust enough to withstand their tough tactics, but they also need to be a fun and enjoyable space for them to spend time in.  So…we went to the experts on this one.

Ashlea Kerr, author and producer of the design inspired blog Glamour Coast Living is definitely tuned into what it takes to create the perfect space for the petits of the household.  Not only is Ashlea one of the Gold Coast’s most talented interior stylists, she’s also a mum to two beautiful twin boys.   Ashlea has thoughtfully curated spaces for her little boys and she’s given us a few tips and tricks.

Practical & Trendy Styling for Your
Child’s Room...

The most important aspect of styling your child’s bedroom, is that you want it to express their personality. You want their room to be a place they want to spend time in - to play, sleep and let their imagination run wild. It must be comfortable, practical, but also stylish and fun too! Here are some tips on styling an on trend, yet practical 3children’s room.

Neutrals...

Keep the bones of the room neutral, including the wall colour, carpet and flooring. You want to limit your colour palette, having three or so key colours and remembering that less is more. Add colour and style to the room through the furnishings, wall art and rugs. These are items that can be replaced and updated more easily than having to paint over walls or recarpet once the colour and theme dates.

Storage...

Make storage practical, accessible and easy to use, so that children know where everything goes. Maximise the storage options in the room, to keep the space clutter free, you can never have enough storage!

Texture & Colour...

If you have kept the bones of the room neutral, then now is the time to add some fun and interest to the room by adding texture and colour. A soft rug or sheepskin for the floor, a nook in the corner with plenty of cushions for feeding or cuddles, plants (fake is always easier & safer for kids), window furnishings and linen are all great ways to introduce texture and colour.

The Walls...

Have fun with a wide range of wall art – choose a variety of different art mediums to interest and intrigue the imagination of your child. You could have a combination of wall decal stickers, framed prints, canvas, 3D shelving, macramé and woven arts. If your creating a space for a younger child, consider a hanging mobile or bunting so they can stare up at the ceiling and be mesmerized. Don’t forget to hang art at different levels, keep fragile and special pieces at an adult’s eye height and child safe art lower, at your little ones’ eye level. Make sure you get down to their height and see the room through their eyes. Make sure you don’t hang the wall art too high or they won’t engage with it.

Remember the room is about your child and reflecting their personality, creating a practical yet stylish space that they adore and want to spend time in. Make sure you involve your child in the process, encouraging them to choose new art or furnishings for their own space. Mak-ing over a room is a great opportunity for you to bond and have fun unleashing your creativity.
